Recreational cannabis use was associated in observational studies with poorer sleep quality, short and long sleep duration as well as more insomnia symptoms, while experimental studies showed no associations.
Comprehensive SR + meta-analysis across k=120 studies (102 observational, 19 experimental) on recreational cannabis use and sleep in the general population. In observational studies: current cannabis use associated with poorer sleep quality, short/long sleep duration, more insomnia symptoms and later chronotype vs. non-use; stronger in men and younger users. In experimental studies: no association between cannabis and sleep quality/sleep duration.
The highest of four GRADE levels, the effect estimate is very reliable.
